Conservation work begins at eleventh century Vishnu temple in Villupuram

Conservation work has begun on the Vishnu temple, a protected monument close to Vanur in Villupuram district

The T.N. Division of Archaeology, in affiliation with the Public Works Division (PWD) has commenced conservation and upkeep work on the Vishnu temple, a protected monument situated in Ulagapuram close to Vanur in Villupuram district. 

The temple is claimed thus far again to the eleventh century A.D and the village was then referred to as Olagamadevipuram, named after the chief queen of Chola King Raja Raja I. 

Based on D. Ramesh, Assistant Professor of Historical past, Arignar Anna Authorities Arts School, Villupuram, “The temple was referred to as Arinjaya Vinnagararm temple, named after the Chola ruler Arinjaya Chola. It was constructed in the course of the interval of Rajendra Chola, and a stone inscription within the temple revealed the presence of two tanks: Gandaradityapereri and Kalakandapereri.”

The temple has been declared a protected monument underneath sub-section 3 of part 3 of the Tamil Nadu Historical and Historic Monuments and Archaeological Websites and Stays Act, 1966. 

Following instructions from Principal Secretary, Finance and Commissioner of Archaeology T. Udhayachandran and underneath the supervision of Joint Director of Archaeology R. Sivanandham, a group led by N. Rajesh, Assistant Engineer from the State Division of Archaeology has begun conservation and upkeep work on the temple.

Based on an official, “The restoration utilizing conventional supplies is being carried out at a price of ₹33 lakh. The funds have been allotted by the State Authorities. The scope of labor consists of the supply of a wall with grill fencing, renewal of the weathering course with a correct gradient, re-laying of the undulated flooring on the interior temple, repairing the Amman shrine, chemical cleansing and clearing of the vegetation present in and across the monument in addition to lighting preparations.”

The official added that the temple has inscriptions of Chola king Rajendra 1 and data the grants made to the temple. The temple was constructed utilizing the architectural model of the Cholas, with a sanctum sanctorum and arthamandapam.
